a) when you say "the ad industry", I'd love to know what that picture looks like to you, given how you've observed it over all that time. I've covered it less than half as long as you have; I will have a very different picture!
b) when you say you don't like it, I'd love to know what specifically you don't like and be able to discuss why it's bad and how it could be different.
c) why you were afraid. Because I guarantee you're not the only one (not least because I've heard others say it privately, too!) and it's hardly like your average punter has a high regard for this trade.
